The Opportunity Fund

Creating opportunities for foster youth to belong, grow, and thrive.

For youth in foster care, extracurricular activities are about so much more than having something to do. Sports, camps, arts, tutoring, clubs, and other activities can provide belonging, supportive relationships, confidence, new skills, and a sense of identity outside of foster care.

Research shows why these opportunities matter. School-age children in foster care have been found to be about twice as likely to experience poor school engagement as their peers (39% compared with 18%), while approximately 40–47% experience clinically significant behavioral or emotional challenges. Research also links participation in organized activities with stronger academic outcomes, supportive adult and peer relationships, reduced loneliness and depression, and a greater sense of belonging.

The Arrow & Stone Opportunity Fund provides support up to $500 to help foster families give youth access to experiences that may otherwise be financially out of reach.

The Opportunity Fund can support sports, camps, clubs, arts and music, tutoring, educational programs, leadership experiences, registration fees, equipment, uniforms, supplies, and more.

Because sometimes joining a team isn't just joining a team. It's finding a place to belong. A camp isn't just a week away. It's a chance to build confidence and create memories. A new activity can become a passion, a mentor, a community, or a glimpse of what's possible.

Applications must be submitted by the youth's foster parent or caregiver, but referrals are always welcome.
